Something has quietly changed about the way people find businesses, and most owners haven’t clocked it yet.
Search Google for almost any question today, and you’ll often get a written answer sitting right at the top, generated by AI, before you reach a single normal result. For a lot of those searches, people read the answer and move on. They never click through to a website at all.
In 2026, this stopped being a curiosity and became the main event. Google has made its AI-powered search the default experience for over a billion people, and by most estimates, around six in ten searches now end without anyone clicking a result. If your plan for getting found was “rank number one on Google and collect the clicks”, that plan has a hole in it.
Before you panic, the news isn’t all bad. It’s just different.
Ranking still matters. Being the source matters more.
Here’s the shift in a sentence: the goal used to be ranking above your competitors, and now it’s being the business that the AI quotes in its answer.
When the AI writes its summary, it pulls from a handful of sources it trusts and often names them. If that’s you, your brand gets put in front of the customer as the credible answer, even if they don’t click straight away. That’s worth a lot. If it’s not you, you’re invisible on that search, no matter where you “rank”.
So a search can now end three ways: they click on you, they click on a competitor, or they click on nobody, but still see who the trusted names are. Two of those three are only wins if you’re in the answer.
What actually helps you get picked
The good news is that being the source the AI trusts comes down to the same fundamentals that good businesses have always had. There’s no trick.
- Answer the real questions. Write the exact questions your customers ask on sales calls, then make sure your site answers them in plain language. Most sites describe their services but never answer the question the customer actually typed.
- Make it easy to read for people and machines. Clear headings, short sections, and a genuine FAQ help both your readers and the AI that’s scanning for a clean answer to lift.
- Be consistent everywhere. AI pulls from across the web, so your name, what you do, and how you describe it should match on your site, your Google profile, and anywhere else you show up. Mixed messages make you a weaker source.
- Keep your money pages strong. When someone’s ready to buy, get a quote, or compare providers, they still click. Commercial searches drive real traffic, so your service and contact pages need to be sharp.
Don’t chase the wrong number
One trap worth avoiding: watching your traffic graph dip on a blog post and assuming something’s broken. If fewer people click but more of the right people are enquiring, you’re winning. Traffic was always a proxy for what you actually care about, which is enquiries and sales. In 2026, watch those instead.
And be wary of anyone promising to “guarantee” you a spot in AI answers. No one can, the same way no honest agency could ever guarantee the number one ranking. What they can do is give you the strong, clear, consistent foundation that makes you the obvious choice to quote.
That’s the whole game now: be genuinely useful, be easy to understand, and be consistent about who you are. Do that, and you’re built for however search keeps changing.
